Over-the-knee boots

It’s November and I have started to plan ahead so I am all ready for holiday parties coming up soon! Not like I have tons of parties to attend but I just don’t like to repeat my outfits… Last week I featured my fringe ankle booties; and this week I am going to talk about over-the-knee boots because those sexy boots are perfect for any parties. Before I purchased my very first pair of OTK boots, I’d never thought that I can pull them off since I am petite and do not have a supermodel’s figure. But I was wrong! My first pair changed my life and I have started to build up my collection ever since.

OTK boots can look great on everybody as long as you pair them with the right pieces. I admit that they are not as versatile as ankle boots or mid-calf boots; but they can definitely make a statement if you know what to do with them. One thing to keep in mind is OTK boot itself already has the “wow” factor so you want to keep everything else as simple/minimal as possible. OTK boots are always great to pair with miniskirts or short dresses as it will make your legs look longer. If you are not a miniskirt or short dress person, denim is always another awesome choice to pair with OTK boots. A pair of skinny jeans will never go wrong with OTK boots because it will show off the shape of your legs! There are lots of other looks you can get: pair with leggings and slouchy sweater for a more casual look; or pair with a longer pencil skirt and classic button-down shirt for a more sophisticated office look.

Just like all other kind of boots, you need to know what you are looking for and what look you trying to get. But always make sure your OTK boots are not too tight or too loose because neither one will make you look attractive. Like I mentioned OTK boots are statement-making pieces so they are definitely a must-have for any holiday parties. I am sure you will get all the attention when entering the party with a pair of sexy over-the-knee boots!

Ankle boots

Pretty sure anyone who knows me has noticed my love for shoes (or I should say more like an addiction). I always look forward to fall/winter because I get to wear boots. Talking about boots, I like ankle boots the most; and I believe every girl needs to have at least one pair in her closet because it is always in style. If it’s possible, I would wear ankle boots everyday because they are so chic and versatile. Compare with knee-high boots, ankle boots can be worn with almost everything and anything.

It is very fun to shop for ankle boots because there are so many choices. The first thing you should think of is the height: flat, wedge, or heel. Block heels are always nice because they are comfy and easy to dress up/down. The second thing you need to decide is the toe: round, almond, or pointy. Almond toe is a great choice because it has the fine balance of both round and pointy toes so it is not too dressy or casual. Third thing you need to know is you want taller or shorter ankle boots. Taller ones usually cover up the entire ankle; and I tend to find they are a bit harder to style with because they sit higher and tighter. Other things you might also want to decide are colour, texture, and other details such as lace, buckles, or studs.

When I said ankle boots can be very versatile, I mean they really are great for everything: from jeans to shorts, from skirts to maxi dresses, and with tights or without. My favourite is to roll my jeans up a little so I show a little of my ankle (Yes I do like some skin showing). Depends on your mood or plan, you can choose the appropriate booties to go with your outfit. Believe it or not, just one pair of ankle boots can give you many different looks as long as you don’t matter spending time mix and match.

Leather jackets

I remember when I was little, I thought leather jacket is the coolest thing in the world. Especially after watching a certain movies and TV series and seeing the iconic characters being cool in their leather jackets, I decided that I will buy myself one when I grow up. Now I am all grown up and I can proudly say I own a leather jacket! There is a difference between wearing leather jackets for fashion purposes and for protection. To me I wear it straightly for fashion so it’s more about the look than structure.

Choosing the perfect leather jacket is not hard but there will still be lots of try-ons involved because they all look different on the body. Depends on what look you are looking for, you need to pay attention to all the little details, such as zippers and collars etc. All these details would determine what look you will get: more biker-like, more girly, or more edgy. If you are going for something classic and timeless, stick with black as it is the most versatile and the easiest to dress up and down. One thing great about leather jacket is no matter how you dress/style it with, it always has that cool classic that can enhance your whole look.

You can wear leather jackets with almost everything: t-shirts, dresses, jeans, leggings, sweaters… You name it you can wear it! Just remember: Keep it simple. Leather jacket itself already has lot of personalities, so you want to keep other accessories to a minimum to avoid overpowering the look of the jacket. Another thing is you can wear leather jackets any seasons, all season long. If you are not sure what to wear when you go out, throw on your leather with a t-shirts and jeans. A quick and easy fix!

Skinny jeans

Last week I talked about wide-leg pants; this week let’s go for something totally opposite – skinny jeans, my all time favourite! l am obsessed with skinny jeans. My obsession is so bad that I have quite a few pairs are still brand new with price tags sitting in my closet. I know many people are skeptical of skinny jeans since they are skin tight and most people don’t like to show every lump and bump on their legs. But the fact is skinny jeans are like every other pieces of clothing, you just need to know what to pair with so you can make yourself a perfect outfit!

Skinny jeans are great for all seasons and weather. They are extremely versatile which you can dress them up and down from day to night. Skinny jeans with over-knee boots is sexy; with ankle boots is chic; with heels is classy; and with sneakers is cute. And they can go with almost every style of top, from sweater to dress shirt. If you worry about skinny jeans will emphasize your hip and thigh, you can wear a long tunic or slouchy sweater so to take the focus away from the bottom (and add a pair of heels always help).

Finding a perfect pair of skinny jeans takes lots of time and energy; and you really need to know your own body and what you are looking for in terms of softness, stretchiness, and length. The first thing I usually look at is the leg opening because some skinny jeans have smaller opening than others. The smaller the leg opening, the snugger at the bottom of the leg. The next thing I look at is the spandex content because more stretchy means more comfortable. Another thing I pay attention to is the length. Regular length is always too long for me; and cropped/ankle legs are perfect because I don’t have to hem them! If I can wear jeans to work, I would wear my skinnies everyday. You need to have at least one pair of skinny jeans in your closet. If you don’t, you should start your hunt!

Culottes/Wide-leg pants

Culottes and wide-leg pants are the new must-have items this fall/winter. Yes they have been a trend for the past while; and I had my eyes on them for the longest time before I took the courage to try them on. Culottes/Wide-leg pants and I have a love-hate relationship. I hate them because they always look nicer on the hangers or on the mannequins. But I really love the versatility of them so much that I’d spent lots of time to try to find the “perfect one”; and I finally found the one after searching for a year!

When comes to culottes and wide-leg pants, many people think that not everyone can pull them off. Don’t put this thought in your head because you can as long as you choose the right styles and you know how to wear them. Both culottes and wide-leg pants are wide in the legs; and they do look and hang like a skirt in some angles. Since the pants are wider fit, you definitely need to be more careful with what top you wear so the whole look is balanced. Also watch out for any pleats because the more pleats on the pants the more attention will be on your hip.

IMG_1191IMG_1185Pants (Aritzia); Sweater (Aritzia)

My new favourite is to wear a cropped sweater with my culottes/wide-leg pants, which gives a cozy 70s look for this cooler weather. In general it is best to have something slimmer and shorter up top to avoid a baggy look. I do highly recommend wear a pair of stilettos or chunky heels with the pants to elevate the look (I love it because it makes me look taller). But like I mentioned at the beginning, culottes and wide-leg pants are very versatile. You can get many different looks depends on what kind of shoes you pair with them. If you want a casual chic look, try them with a pair of sneakers. Get on the trend and make sure you have at least one pair of culottes or wide-leg pants in your closet!
