Pencil skirts

Don’t ask me how many pencil skirts I have in my closet. I am not able to answer this question because I have too many. In the skirt category, pencil skirts are definitely my favourite. They have saved lots of my time in the mornings when I struggle to decide on what to wear. They are perfect for work as they are classic yet modern; but they are also awesome for weekends because of their casual yet stylish looks. And the best thing is I can pair almost anything with my pencil skirts: sweaters, tees, blouses, button-down shirts, blazers etc. If you are looking for an effortlessly trendy look, pencil skirts are your must-have!

Pencil skirts are great for every body shape. You don’t have to avoid buying or wearing pencil skirts because of how body-hugging they are; you just need to know your body so you can choose the right skirt to help enhance your best features. Keep in mind pencil skirts are meant to be high-waisted so you don’t want to pull your skirts too low. Personally I like my pencil skirts sitting right at the knee because that makes my legs look longer and leaner. And I usually like mine solid ideally black so I can wear something with more prints or patterns up top. To get the illusion of nice curves, peplum top and pencil skirt are the perfect combination since it helps to enhance your waistline. Of course it will never go wrong to pair with heels!

To make sure your pencil skirts look great, you have to go for the ones that look smooth on your body. That’s why it is very crucial that you don’t go for the one is either too tight or too loose. Especially when the skirt is too tight you will have a very hard time sitting down. Due to the narrow fit, sometimes movement can be restricted. You will find that you need to walk in shorter steps/strides because of that. But not to worry; all you need is a little bit of practice then you will be a pro when you have your pencil skirts on!

Little black dresses

Please tell me you have at least one little black dress in your closet! I mean it because your wardrobe is not completed if you don’t have one. A LBD is an essential item that you cannot say no to; it has all the elements every girl wants: elegant, sexy, chic, classy. I always love LBD. Besides I absolutely love the colour black, I find that LBD is so versatile and I can wear it 9-9, morning to evening. I can pretty much wear my little black dresses anywhere: go to work, grocery shopping, evening events, or upscale parties.

If you think a LBD is boring then you are totally wrong. You can definitely get many different looks from your LBD depends on what you wear it with. The greatest thing of LBD is you can easily dress it up and down. If you are going for a classy business look, you can wear your LBD with a blazer jacket; if you want a elegant look, wear it with a faux fur shawl or collar; if you look for a chic look, then you can pair it with a leather jacket. And you can always use jewelry and accessories to enhance the look. You will never go wrong with putting LBD and statement necklace together. Personally I like the combination of LBD with pearls because it makes me feel like I am Holly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s!

Next time you have a special occasion and need to find a perfect dress, you should go for a LBD. I know you might think a dress with bright and vibrant colour will be more eye catching; but often it is very hard to mix and match with other colours. With a LBD, you can use other things like makeup or shoes to help making the outfit more magnificent. Both sexy scarlet red and vampy dark lips would go very well with any LBDs so make them a staple piece in your closet! As Karl Lagerfeld said “One is never over-dressed or underdressed with a Little Black Dress”.

Parkas

As the weather is getting colder, I have been bundling up to try to stay warm every morning. And it’s less than a month till Christmas, I need to have a master plan to keep warm while wearing all the fancy outfits to different parties. Here parkas come in handy! Before I purchased my first parka, I never thought that parka is my thing because most of them look pretty bulky. I had lots of coats but never a parka. But with all the rain in Vancouver, I finally gave in and started my journey of finding my perfect parka, which would keep me dry but still fashionable.

IMG_1396

There are lots of choices when it comes to parkas; and it all depends on your preference on styles, fits, colours, as well as what weather/climate you wear the parkas in. I like to pay attention to the types of insulation, which can determine the weight and warmth the jackets will be. I personally like goose down because it is very light and warm. I also like to watch the shape of the parkas. I am not a big fan of anything too big/bulky so I like my parkas a little fitted. To avoid the overly heavy/boyish look, you want your parkas to be sexily oversized, which means you should go for one with a drawstring or a belt to give you a waist or one is made in a fitted shape. Fabrics are very important too because preferably you want your parkas to be waterproof, if not at least water-resistant, so you can wear them in the rain.

Before you purchase a parka, don’t be afraid to do some research online and in different stores. Trust me you have lots of options so you want to take your time and make sure you get one that really suits your needs. Besides insulation, shape, and fabric, there are still many things you need to look into: hood, zippers, seams, pockets, layers etc. Once you find your perfect one, you can wear yours everyday and with everything. And you don’t have to worry about being cold in your sexy dresses, skirts, tops going to parties because your parkas will get you through any weather!

Mini-skirts

It has been a while since I wore my mini skirts. If I remember it right the last time I put mine on was almost 5 years ago. Not like I don’t like them, I just didn’t really have any chance to wear them. Especially when I was younger, I wasn’t allowed to leave home wearing mini-skirts under my parents’ supervision. When it comes to mini-skirts, I know many girls are skeptical of the length. Not going to lie, I am very self-conscious too so I totally understand where this is coming from.

IMG_1428

You don’t have to be a model or cheerleader in order to pull off mini-skirts; you can wear mini-skirts anytime as long as you know how to choose the right style. Depends on your comfort level, you can go from bodycon (tight) to pleats (flowy). I personally like the classic A-line cut because I find this cut the most flattering. Besides finding the right style of skirt, picking the right top to go with it is very important too. T-shirts usually go well with mini-skirts because of the simplicity. I like to pair my minis with sweaters but I always make sure my sweater is not too long that ends up hiding my skirt and makes me look like I wear nothing at the bottom. And most shoes go well with minis: boots, heels, wedges, sandals, flats. Especially boots and mini-skirts, they are the classic match!

IMG_1438

Even though mini-skirts are not the most versatile, but you can still wear them every season, all year long. In summer you can pair your minis with gladiator sandals; in winter you can wear them with a pair of over-the-knee boots. If you really don’t feel 100% comfortable with just wearing a mini-skirt, you can always wear leggings or tights/stockings underneath. You have to feel comfortable in what you are wearing in order for you to be confident! If you are having a holiday party soon, you should consider wearing a mini-skirt with velvet top and of course a pair of heels.

Stilettos

Let’s continue the shoe journey! To complete the shoe collection in your closet, you definitely need to have at least one pair of stiletto heels. I would never say no to stilettos because they are irresistible. I always love the high, long, and thin heels because they are so classy yet sexy. It is not a secret that I wear heels everyday and I love thin heels with pointy toes. You probably think I start wear heels when I was very young. I actually didn’t own my first pair until I was 20. Since then I wear them whenever I can; I kept on practicing and that’s how I can wear very high stiletto heels now.

IMG_1405

A pair of stilettos can elevate your whole outfit. No matter what you are wearing, stilettos can give an illusion of longer and slimmer legs. Especially for petite people like me, stilettos always save my life by making me look taller and helping to firm my bottom. Stilettos can pretty much go with anything: any type of denims, leggings, long/short skirts, dresses, or shorts. A pair can go from dressy to casual and from day to evening. One of the fun things is you can choose a pair of fancy stilettos with lots of details such as feather or stones to pair with just black but you will still be the centre of attention. Just make sure the pair of stilettos goes well with your outfit so the whole look would make sense. They are like the last piece of the puzzle to a perfect outfit!

IMG_1407

The most common concern/complaint regarding stilettos is they are not comfortable to walk around. Trust me it took me a long time to figure out what to do to minimize the pain cause by wearing stilettos. The first thing to watch for is the height of the heels. Some stilettos are as high as 8 inches; they are great to look at but aren’t the best choice to walk around with. I find that 4-4.5 inches are the most comfortable because it’s not too high that my feet are bending to a steep angel which makes walking/standing impossible. The second thing I look at is the placement of the heels. If the heels are positioned too far back they won’t provide any support and that’s why your feet hurt wearing them. Other things I do is putting in gel insoles and heel grips to help reduce pain. It’s party season coming up so make sure you are all ready with your stilettos!
